Cost Controls Specialist

MWH Constructors is currently seeking a Cost Controls Specialist to support the construction of a Water Treatment Plant located in Portland, OR. This project will be the first of its kind in Portland, scheduled to break ground in Fall of 2023 and ultimately supplying 135 million gallons of water a day to the Portland community by Fall of 2027. This position is a great opportunity to work with a multidiscipline group of engineers and technicians through the entire project delivery life cycle, from groundbreaking to closeout.


We are looking for a detail-oriented and analytical Cost Controls Specialist to join our team. In this role, you will be responsible for overseeing and monitoring project budgets, tracking expenses, and implementing cost control measures. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in finance or accounting, excellent analytical skills, and the ability to work collaboratively with cross-functional teams.

Essential Functions

  • Develop and implement cost control procedures and policies to ensure projects stay within budgetary guidelines
  • Monitor project expenses and track actual costs against estimates
  • Collaborate with project managers and vendors to analyze and report on cost variances
  • Conduct regular audits to identify areas of cost savings and recommend process improvements
  • Prepare and present cost reports to management and stakeholders
  • Participate in project planning meetings to provide cost control guidance and support
  • Assist in the preparation of project budgets, including cost estimation and forecasting
  • Collaborate with finance and accounting teams to ensure accurate and timely reporting of financial data
  • Stay up to date with industry trends and best practices in cost controls

Basic Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in finance, accounting, or a related field
  • Proven experience working in cost controls, finance, or accounting
  • Strong knowledge of financial analysis techniques, budgeting, and forecasting
  • Proficient in using financial management systems and software
  • Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Strong attention to detail and ability to work with complex financial data
  • Effective communication and interpersonal skills to work collaboratively with cross-functional teams
  • Ability to prioritize and manage multiple projects simultaneously
  • Knowledge of industry standards and regulations related to cost controls is a plus
  • Professional certifications such as Certified Cost Professional (CCP) or Cost Accounting Standards Board (CASB) is a plus

Preferred Qualifications

  • Prior experience with CMiC
  • Currently hold or pursuing professional certification from PMI or AACE (PMI-SP, PSP, CCP, CCT)
