About the Role
MWH is currently seeking an experienced Senior Environmental Project Manager to support the California Department of Water Resources (DWR) Salton Sea Species Conservation Habitat Project, a large-scale environmental mitigation and restoration program located at the south end of the Salton Sea. This position combines traditional construction management responsibilities with strong environmental oversight.
The Senior Environmental Project Manager will oversee a small project staff and support service consultants to ensure the project is constructed in accordance with environmental regulation requirements of the contract and the expectations of the client. Reporting directly to MWH’s Area Manager, the Senior Environmental Project Manager is the primary interface with the owner; the contractor; and regulatory representatives. In addition to environmental compliance the Senior Environmental Project Manager will assist with future business development.
Essential Functions
- The Environmental Project Manager leads the development, implementation, and oversite of the clients environmental permitting and compliance needs. This role ensures regulatory compliance, champions sustainability initiatives, mitigates environmental risks, and provides expert guidance on environmental issues.
- The Environmental Project Manager will coordinate with stakeholders and drive continuous improvement in environmental performance and requirements on the project.
- Interface with clients, oversight representatives, regulatory agencies, etc., for both business development and project execution.
- Make decisions and recommendations that can improve corporate relationships with client and profitability of managed projects.
- Develop new business opportunities related to a particular client, group of clients or geographical area.
- Initiate and maintain liaison with client, consultants and contractors to facilitate construction activities.
- Ensure all client, company, and project policies, procedures, standards, etc., are adhered to properly.
- Complete project objectives and performance standards within boundaries of client policies and procedures.
- Provide oversight and direction to all environmental compliance and regulatory mandates on a project. Interact with the agencies on behalf of the client.
- Plan, coordinate, and/or supervise activities of all company and consultant personnel on assigned project(s).
- Will have day-to-day supervisory responsibility over environmental, ecological, cultural, and tribal support staff.
- Implement company safety program. Assure that direct reporting employees follow safe work practices and use company guidelines and policies for planning and executing work in a safe manner.
- Attend industry networking events.
Basic Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in environmental engineering or environmental sciences. Masters degree is preferred.
- Minimum of 10 years of progressive experience in environmental management, with demonstrated success in leading environmental initiatives and teams. Experience in heavy civil engineering or water resources is preferred.
- Serve as the subject matter expert on all applicable local, state, and federal environmental regulations (e.g., CEQA, NEPA, EPA, Clean Air Act, Clean Water Act, RCRA).
- Develop and implement strategies to ensure full compliance and reduce environmental liability. Manage and submit all required environmental permits, regulatory reports, and other documentation.
- Conduct or oversee environmental audits, inspections and risk assessments to identify and correct potential hazards.\Lead incident investigations, determine root causes, and implement corrective actions following environmental incidents.
- Collect, manage, and analyze environmental performance data, and prepare comprehensive reports for internal and external stakeholders
- 8+ years of management experience, including client interface and solicitation, marketing and business development, planning and execution, project delivery, and staff supervision.
- Thorough understanding of corporate and industry practices, processes, standards, etc. and their impact on project activities.
- Excellent communication, interpersonal, organizational, supervisory and planning skills.
- Must be able to apply innovative and effective management techniques to maximize employee performance.
- Strong business acumen.
- Project P/L experience.
Compensation
- Anticipated salary for the position is budgeted at $180,000 - $220,000 a year.
